Experience Augmented Pedestrian Wayfinding

چکیده

This thesis explores collaborative route planning for pedestrians, where the users’s experience with the system and with the suggested routes augment the route planning for other users. I describe a technique for sharing experiences between groups of users that share some common characteristics. The technique is demonstrated with an experimental application running on Smartphones and PDAs. The device that the application is developed on is connected to a GPS device via a Bluetooth connection, and it uses open, freely available Web Map Services (WMS) for map images. The application allows for point to point route planning, searching for a route to the closest point of interest of a particular kind (f.ex. the closest accessible parking space), user feedback to routes, GPS tracking and recording of user movements, and creation of new roads by the individual user. Route planning is performed using the classic A* algorithm on a road network consisting both of proprietary data (from the Norwegian Mapping Authority) and open data (from the Open Street Maps project).

Collaborative Filtering Based Route Recommendation for Assisting Pedestrian Wayfinding

Mobile pedestrian wayfinding service is one of the most popular Location Based Services. In the era of Web 2.0, current mobile wayfinding services usually suffer from the following problems: the lack of social navigation support (utilizing other people‟s experiences), and the challenge of making user-generated content useful. This paper designs a collaborative filtering based route recommendati...

Implementing an augmented reality-enabled wayfinding system through studying user experience and requirements in complex environments

Background: Wayfinding is an exceedingly complicated cognitive process, especially in complex environments such as hospitals, shopping centers and airports. Inhabitants of such large environments can become lost very easily if they are unfamiliar with the environment. Although they may eventually be able to discover the route to a specific destination, interacting with conventional wayfinding a...

Comparison of Spatial Knowledge Acquisition with Different Presentation Forms in the Context of GPS-based Pedestrian Navigation

This paper deals with current ongoing efforts to investigate the influence of different presentation forms on spatial knowledge acquisition. The acquisition of spatial knowledge based on map, augmented reality (AR), and language is analyzed and compared in an empirical test for GPS-based pedestrian navigation. This paper describes the hypothesis and the methodology. Also work in progress on int...

Reference Resolution for Pedestrian Wayfinding Systems

References to objects in our physical environment are common especially in language about wayfinding. Advanced wayfinding systems that interact with the pedestrian by means of (spoken) natural language therefore need to be able to resolve references given by pedestrians (i.e. understand what entity the pedestrian is referring to). The contribution of this paper is a probabilistic approach to re...

Pedestrian Navigation Aids, Spatial Knowledge and Walkability

This study attempts to demonstrate the impact of pedestrian navigation aids on spatial knowledge acquisition and its link to walkability in an urban environment. Spatial knowledge is important for pedestrian travel. Rich spatial knowledge contributes to a good mental image of the walking environment, which consequently increases travel confidence and potentially allows more active walking. Whil...

The Impact of Perception and Wayfinding on Pedestrian Movements

When simulating non-trivial scenarios of pedestrian movements it is necessary to model both the small-scale movements to a visible target (operational level) and the process to find and select routes leading to a possibly non-visible destination (tactical level). A huge number of different approaches modelling the operational level of pedestrian movements are already proposed. However, the majo...
